the basics

Designing your message

Designing clear, good looking messages is a core part of any effective newsletter. Vero Newsletters gives you the tools to visually design and manage message content.

Choose a channel

Vero Newsletters provides different editors for different channels. To begin adding content, select which channel you will use to message your users.

At this time Vero Newsletters only supports email channels.

Learn how to add and configure messaging channels here.

Adding content: email messages

Choose your from address

You can add in multiple email addresses to use when designing email messages. To add an email address:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Select Email addresses
  • Select + Add address
  • Fill out the Name, Email address and Reply-to address fields.
  • Click the green tick box ✅ to save your email address.

For reference, here’s what each field means:

  • Name: The name you want the email to come from. For example, “Chris from Vero.”
  • Email address: The email address your message will appear to come from in a recipient’s email client.
  • Reply-to address (optional): The email address you want replies to go to when a recipient selects Reply to in their email client.

Drag and Drop

Our drag-and-drop content editor is a comprehensive, simple and accessible tool that anyone can use to create great-looking, custom email templates. Simply drag and drop content blocks onto a blank canvas or start with one of our example templates.

You can read an in-depth guide on using our Drag-and-Drop editor here.

HTML

Vero Newsletters fully supports using raw HTML to define the content of an email. This enables you to bring your own, fully customized templates into Vero, with full support for media queries and responsive HTML templates.

Does Vero Newsletters automatically inline my CSS styles when using raw HTML?

Vero Newsletters provides you the option to Inline CSS. When selecting this option your HTML will be inlined at send time.

Read more about the inline CSS option.

Are media queries supported when using raw HTML in Vero Newsletters?

Yes, Vero Newsletters fully supports media queries, however if you have the Inline CSS option turned on, you must move your media queries into a separate <style> element and add the data-premailer=ignore tag to make sure Vero doesn’t try to inline those styles.

You can read an in-depth guide on using our HTML editor here.

Personalising content using Liquid

Inserting imported audience data

In Vero, we use a prefix within the standard Liquid {{ template fields to denote where to load the data from.

{{user.property}} replaces the attribute with the name of any customer property that you’ve captured using the Vero API or uploaded via CSV. For example, {{user.first_name}} would print John for a user profile that has the attribute first_name with value John.

Vero-specific merge tags

There are several reserved, Vero-specific fields that enable key Vero Newsletters functions including one-click unsubscribe and “View in browser” (permalink). The following is a list of all available fields:

  • {{url.unsubscribe_link}} inserts a unique unsubscribe URL (e.g. https://newsletters.getvero.com/unsubscribe/UNIQUE_HASH). When a recipient clicks this link their endpoint will be marked as unsubscribed.
  • {{url.unsubscribe}} inserts an anchor <a> tag containing the raw unsubscribe URL generated by {{url.unsubscribe_link}} (as above).
  • {{url.permalink_link}} inserts a unique URL (e.g. https://newsletters.getvero.com/view-online/UNIQUE_HASH) that points to an online, hosted version of the individual message that was sent.
  • {{url.permalink}} inserts an anchor <a> tag containing the raw “View in browser” URL generated by {{url.permalink_link}} (as above).

Liquid functions

Vero supports most default Liquid functions, as well as a number of additional functions for convenience.

Read our Liquid personalization guide for a list of available functions.

Previewing your message

You can preview your message by:

  • Selecting the Newsletter you wish to send.
  • Selecting the Action menu at the top right.
  • Choosing Preview via email.
  • Entering your email and selecting Send.

At this time you can only send a preview to one email address at a time.

Note that all new Vero Newsletters accounts are reviewed and manually verified. This happens quickly but if, for some reason, you account is not fully verified, you are only able to send preview messages to the email address of your user account. That is to say, if you signed up as test@getvero.com, you could only send previews to test@getvero.com until verified.
