# Ad-hoc Segment Audience

> Build a one-off broadcast audience from segment conditions without saving a new segment.

An ad-hoc segment lets you define a broadcast's audience with conditions, directly in the campaign. Use it for one-off sends where creating and maintaining a separate segment isn't worth it, such as combining two segments or excluding users who are in another segment.

Ad-hoc segments use the same conditions builder as [saved segments](https://help.getvero.com/vero-2/segments/creating-and-editing-segments.md), so you can filter on user properties, tags, events, segment membership and message interactions. The conditions belong to the campaign only and don't appear in your list of segments.

## Creating an ad-hoc segment audience

1. In your broadcast, navigate to the **Audience** section.

2. Click **Add Audience**.

3. Under **Use a segment**, select **Create ad-hoc segment**.

4. Add your conditions. Users must match every condition under **Users who meet ALL these conditions**, and at least one condition under **ANY of these conditions**. [Learn more about segment conditions](https://help.getvero.com/vero-2/segments/segment-conditions.md)

5. Click **Create Audience**.

Vero evaluates the conditions and imports the matching users. Once the import finishes, the **Audience** section shows **Ad-hoc Segment** with a summary of your conditions and a preview of the users in the audience.

### Example: combine and exclude segments

To send to users in your "Active customers" segment who aren't in your "Recent purchasers" segment, add two conditions under **Users who meet ALL these conditions**:

* **Segment** – `is in segment` "Active customers"
* **Segment** – `is not in segment` "Recent purchasers"

## Managing an ad-hoc segment audience

While the broadcast is a draft or paused, you can use the actions in the **Audience** section to:

* **Refresh** – re-evaluate the conditions to get an up-to-date list of users.
* **Edit** – open the conditions builder to change the conditions. Saving your changes re-imports the audience.
* **Save as segment** – open the **...** menu and select **Save as segment** to turn the conditions into a saved segment. Enter a name and an optional description, and Vero creates the segment and opens it in the segment builder. Your broadcast keeps using its ad-hoc segment audience.
* **Remove** – click the trash icon to remove the audience and choose a different audience type.

## Refresh at send time

**Refresh audience at send time** is enabled by default for ad-hoc segment audiences. Vero re-evaluates the conditions immediately before sending, so users who have started or stopped matching them since you created the audience are included or excluded.

If your conditions take several minutes to evaluate, you can uncheck the option under **Options** so the broadcast sends at exactly the time you scheduled. ## Personalizing your content

You can reference any property stored on a user's profile in your message content. [Learn how to personalize content using Liquid](https://help.getvero.com/vero-2/message-content/how-to-personalise-your-message-using-liquid.md)
