# Manage a profile's topic subscriptions

> View a profile's subscription status for each topic, and subscribe or unsubscribe them from a topic on their behalf.

Each profile has a subscribed or unsubscribed status for every [subscription topic](/vero-2/subscriptions/subscriptions-overview) in your project. You can see those statuses on the profile and change them when a user asks you to.

## Prerequisites

1. **At least one topic** – see [Using topics](/vero-2/subscriptions/using-topics).
2. **The Member or Owner role** – to change a topic status. Other roles can view statuses but not change them. See [Set up team access](/vero-2/account-settings/setting-up-team-access-in-vero-connect).

## Viewing topic subscriptions

The **Subscriptions** panel on a profile's **Overview** tab shows how many topics the profile is subscribed to and lists the first 10 topics. Click **View all subscriptions** to open the **Subscriptions** tab, which lists every topic with its **Status** and when it was **Last updated**.

Each status shows whether the profile is subscribed and how that status was reached:

* **Subscribed (Default)** or **Unsubscribed (Default)** – no choice has been recorded, so the profile follows the topic's default status.
* **Subscribed (Opted In)** or **Unsubscribed (Opted Out)** – an explicit choice was recorded, from the preference center, the API, or this page.

## Changing a topic subscription

1. Open the profile and select the **Subscriptions** tab.
2. Click the actions menu (**…**) on the topic's row.
3. Select **Subscribe…** or **Unsubscribe…**.
4. Confirm by clicking **Subscribe** or **Unsubscribe**.

The change takes effect immediately and is recorded as **Opted In** or **Opted Out**.

  Only change a topic subscription when you have the user's explicit consent, such as a request to your support team.

## Changing topic subscriptions through the API

To set topic statuses from your own systems, such as your signup form or another tool that holds consent, include `preferences.topics` when you [identify a user](/api-reference/users/identify). Each item names one topic by either its `id` or its `name`, and sets its `status` to `subscribed` or `unsubscribed`.

Topics you leave out keep their current status. Statuses set through the API are recorded as **Opted In** or **Opted Out**, the same as changes made on the profile.

## Topic and global subscription status

Changing a topic status does not change the profile's global subscription status. A profile that is globally unsubscribed receives no messages, whatever its topic statuses. To change the global status, use the **Actions** menu on the profile. See [Unsubscribe a user](/vero-2/user-profiles/how-unsubscribes-are-managed-in-vero-2).
